Trigger points are "points" or spots of hyper-irritated skeletal muscles caused by some form of injury. The injured area of the muscle contracts, which restricts normal blood flow and allows the build-up of toxins to accumulate. Pain, numbness, tingling and weakness is felt at the trigger point, and "referred pain" is felt in other locations in the body. In Trigger Point massage, the therapist applies static compression for 10 seconds, releases the pressure, and reapplies the pressure 10 more seconds in a pumping action while the client breathes deeply. This action flushes the toxins, calms the nerves, releases endorphins and re-energizes the body and mind.
